Don Walker "We're All Gunna Die"

Party (Walker)

I just wanna have a party
My dreams are on the town
I just wanna have a party
And hunt those visions down

The cool air sings
With hidden wings
The moon is on the hill
I just wanna have a party
And see what I can kill

I just wanna have a party
And let my demons in
Yeah I got an itchin for a party
Crawlin round my skin
I got the blue fires
Of new desires
Crawling through my mind
I just wanna have a party
And leave my skin behind

Well the arab sings
And things crow dim
And faces arenŽt so clear
The walls
And then the ceiling seem to swim
Then disappear

I just wanna have a party
And peel away my shell
I just wanna have a party
And blow this place to hell

I need someone
Old or young
To hold me when i fall
I just need another body
To clean my filthy soul

Yeah the cool air sings
With hidden wings
The moon is on the hill
I just wanna have a party
And see what I can kill

Eternity (Walker)

Long ago and far away
I was hitchhikin on a clear blue day
The catseyes broke in my feet
My tongue was dry as the hills where Jesus hung
And I lay
And wondered if he died for me
On at highway straighter than the barrel of eternity

My focus panned on the shattered stones
The shifting sand in the lizard bones
The withered skin on my hand was lined
Like a map of the land IŽd left behind alone
A drifter and a pharisee
On a highway straighter than the barrel of eternity

IŽd long lost count to name the days
When a long black car came outa the haze
The door swung open
And the driver called my name
In a voice like a mama doll and I knew
No matter what the game would be
This man's staring down the barrel of eternity
Yeah this man's staring down the barrel of eternity

He said I'm so tired brother
And I've travelled such a long long way
And I'm running shy of water
Won't you ride with me in the highway on this day

I said " I know you well, I know you well
People talk, and I heard them tell
How you ate up the seed corn
All this side of the Sambatyon River,
How the cattle died
How the pain o' your fever
Spread across the moon like a thunderhead
Like a lost will,
A hole in the law,
Split the stone o' the cathedral floor

I know the danger
But cannot close my heart
As a man of the book, on those
Who've lost the battle"
I'm hookin my thumb
Round a well sucked bottle of Inner Circle rum
And I'm handin it over
He's whackin it down
His old man's adam's apple's jumpin around
Kickin at a rope-burn under his chin
And I'm lookin at the sky like a sheeta hot tin
And I'm feeling so sick in the head
An' I fall to one knee,
Then another
An' all that I can see
Is a highway straighter than the barrel of eternity
A highway straighter than the barrel of eternity

And in a dream I saw a Woman
She was burying a thing in the sand
"There are tales among these hills" she whispered
"Far beyond Jerusalem's command"

Long ago, and far away
I opened my eyes and attempted to pray
I opened my eyes on a land as frozen
Cold as the hole where Jesus rose
And I lay
And wondered if he died for me
On a highway straighter than the barrel of eternity

My Girl (Walker)

My girl drinks whiskey every morning in bed
Makes love like she's wakin the dead
Smokes fifty cigarettes a day
She don't care what anyone says
Here she comes
Here she comes
Well here she comes now all dressed in black
Once you've had a dancer there ain't no goin back

I love to watch her when wer'e hangin out
Watch her arse when its time for her shout
When she moves its easy to tell
She used to dance at the carousel
Here she comes
Yeah, here she comes
Well here she comes now all dressed in black
Once you've had a dancer there ain't no goin back

I've had french princesses for a night and a day
Spoonin' Beluga where I cannot say
Air hostesses demonstratin for me
The safety procedure in their lingerie
Ph.D's who could bust a D-cup
Check-out girls wanna be taped up
Older women wanna mother a son
Now I'm a man and she's the only one
And here she comes
Here she comes
Here she comes now all dressed in black
Once you've had a dancer there ain't no goin back

The Wedding (Walker)

There's a ghost at the wedding
No one else can see
Yeah there's a ghost at the wedding
Only she can see
There's a ghost at the wedding
And he looks like me

He wandered into town
Draggin a snake
He's got a lazy eye
The bride, she cannot shake
At the wedding
And no one else can see

There's a ghost at the wedding
And he looks like me

Now he's through the congregation
He's by the alter rail
But there is no hesitation
Underneath the veil
At the wedding
Not that anyone can see

There's a ghost at the wedding
And he looks like me

The Good Book (Walker)

Sometime round midnight
I guess its sometime round midnight as the crows flies
As the ceiling fan goes round, and the
Insomnia comes down
Semis with the hammer down
Hit the bypass round the town
Reach the highway just outside and
Burn on by

Memories unshackled come and crawl around my mind
I need the Good Book
I need the word to turn my gasoline to wine

I hold the key
Yeah, I hold the key to where I lie
I own the suitcase fulla snapshots by the door
I own the bottle by the bedside,
The bootheels on the floor
I read the future in the coal that hangs forgotten in my fingers
And flares above my face for every scattered soul that hungers
In disconnected, never mattered places just like this
I own the wind outside,
Bashing, bashing on the motel sign
I need the Good Book
I need the word to turn my gasoline to wine

And I could love just about anything
That paid me back in kind
I need the Good Book
I need the word to turn my gasoline to wine

The Circus (Walker/Smotherman)

I went to the circus to waste some time
The barker was yellin whats on
I paid up my money, and waited in line
And the circus was just like home

A crowd had gathered, but I walked on by
To backstage places unknown
And I could tell by the fires, and the moon in the sky
That the circus was just like home

There were animal cages, and animal tails
And women who moved like a poem
With vampire faces, and beautiful nails
And the circus was just like home

The strongman was dancing in the clothes
That he borrowed from a girl in the chorus line
The gypsey was drinkin like theres no tomorrow
With the ringmaster
Who was drinking faster
And blessing everybody with wine

They howled at the liontamer running around
Lookin like a christian in Rome
They were loading up the cannon
With a portuguese clown
And the circus was just like home

And everywhere I wandered I could still hear the barker
Calling on the faithful to play
The fires burned down and the air grew darker
And I filled my hand up with circus sand,
Shook it out, and went my way

I went down to the circus, it was cash in advance
The barker was yelling whats on
He said come to the circus
You can smell the romance
You can see all the tigers
And the elephants dance
And thousands of children
Paid up for the chance
And the circus was just like home

I am the King (Walker)

A small tropical airline
Wanders by on up the coast, and leaves the sky
As blind as it will always be
Blind as a pearl
Clean of all design, and in this world
I am the king of everything
That I see

This beach, this girl
The dirty dress, the set of wheels
That will not die,
And came my may for free

Its all that i own
Along with a few years left on the bone
And I am the king
Of everything I see

Theres an old guy used to hang around the bars
In what they call a town
Who'd quote ecclesiastes for a beer
Well, they found him dead a week ago
Beside the tidal creek
Below the wreckage where he lived
His final year

The Grenadillo vines
Concealed the bones, but not the lines
Of a warplane of imperial Japan
And beneath one broken wing they found
A trace of something else
Besides the dried carnation milk
Among the cans

A story swept the town
Then the conversation settled back to
Will we go out fishing
Maybe not

And silence
And the ocean
And the falling of the balls
Inside the tables
When the money hits the slot

And now this girl
She seems to know I'll please myself
And so will she
She's got one bare foot up on the dash
She's shaving off a block of hash
And I am the king
Of everything I see

She's drinking beer, talking trash
About a pension cheque she's yet to cash
And I am the king
Of all that I see

Howl at the Moon (Walker/Smotherman)

There's a little bar called the House of Cards
You hang a hard left at the timber yard
You cross your heart and you hope to shout
And if you tell em Joe Sentcha, they'll knock you out
And carry ondrinkin like its midnight when its noon
But if you wanna run with the wolves
You gotta howl at the moon

There's an old guy there wears two left shoes
He wears a black eye patch and jailhouse tattoos
He rides a B.S.A. and when he gets tight
He fires it of into the heart of the night
And lays a strip of rubber from Adelaide to Wittenoon
But if you wanna run with the wolves
You gotta howl at the moon

Well you can play it safe or you can get a life
Either way you do, you've got to pay the price
Anything you do, it comes due
In the end

I know a girl who sits up on a stage
And charges a buck for you to guess her age
If you get it right you get to win your weight in love
But if you hesitate or get it wrong
She'll belt you round the room
But if you wanna run with the wolves
You gotta howl at the moon

In the End (Walker)

A twister rides a wicked line
A homebreaker knows no friend
I know that you'll be mine
In the end
In the end

Our two hearts are of a kind
That break before they bend
Still I know that you'll be mine
In the end
In the end

You'll say my promises are hollow
But when all the crying's done
You know I'll talk you round
Yeah
Thats just the way we've always been
And thats the way its always gunna be
In the end
You know I can always talk you round
In the end
And thats the way its always gunna be
In the end

Carless in ISA (Walker)

Well I'm carless in ISA
lost in space
another time
another place
people look right through ya
when you're alone
I've been here forever
and its a long way home

In the beginning
we all know love
its what goes missing
its all we have
well I'm carless in ISA
living alone
with all that I remember
and its a long way home
and its a long way home

We're All Gunna Die (Walker)

We're All Gunna Die
And everything we've done
Very chance we've had
To love, or to run
Will be nothing more
Than one line on a stone

We're All Gunna Die

And when this dream is gone
We'll be six feet down alone

You gotta hold me now
Cause we never know the hour

We're All Gunna Die

And when the make-up is gone
There ain't nothin' on the bone

We're All Gunna Die
And every kiss we lean to feed on
Is just a kiss goodbye
Just a twist in the blade
That we can hang another face on

Its just a masquerade
But it can take us, as its played
Away from the tide
From the hollow drum
That measures all of our actions

This is a time just to be
Hand that bottle here to me

We're All Gunna Die

And the time will come
When this dream is gone
When the bones that house
All this fire of ours
Will be six feet down alone

Three Blackbirds (Walker)

Three Blackbirds flew together on the gather of a storm
A cyclone wind that blew in bitterly
And one sang for the ocean, and another for the Lord
And one flew from the arm he could not see

Harry Hunter and Sid Hadley and Frenchy D'Antoine
Landed at the cape now called Leveque
A fortune could be made enslaving able bodied men
And among the inland tribes they were to seek

Now the western desert people lived in harmony and peace
And fished the land for thirty thousand years
They sang a song unbroken in its innocent release
As the end of all their history drew near

Harry Hunter came among them all in violence and stealth
With a rifle and a club and iron chains
And shackled them in misery and marched them to the coasT
To Frenchy, then he rode inland again

The slaves were shipped away to sea and thrown among the waves
And some swam back to Frenchy D'Antoine
And these were sold as divers to the pearlers down the coast
And either way the black man had to drown

Now in dream Sid Hadley saw a chain gang from the east
Crawling down the beach and out to sea
These were kings and holy fathers, and every man who'd owned
His fellow man in every century

Out above the Indian Ocean sat the devil on a horse
The clothes af Harry Hunter on his bones
And among those silent faces crawling by without a hope
Sid Hadley thought he recognised his own

And waking in a freezing sweat he called out Harry's name
And argued with his friend's iniquity
And swore he'd leave the evil trade and build a mission house
To teach the black man Christianity

And driven by his vision Hadley tried to bring the word
To Forest River as the weeks unwound
But the people there remembered him the Blackbird that he was
And all his preaching fell on stony ground

And whipped on by his mission Hadley begged the island tribes
To expiate the evil in his soul
And as the months unravelled there he won his tribal name
And on Sunday Island built a church and school

And he helped his people sell their beche de mer and trochus shell
And they harvested their pearls in Jesus' name
The Anglican authorities in Perth did not approve
But Sunday Island prospered just the same

Now Harry Hunter's dreams were filled with silver and with gold
And Frenchy said a gypsey can't be blamed
As he sailed back down to Cossack with his cargo in the hold
And Harry Hunter rode inland again

But gambling on the waterfront and indonesian girls
Consumed the gold of Frenchy D'Antoine
The men they sold in misery were drowned among the pearls
And Harry Hunter drank his share alone

And when slavery was abolished through the empire round the world
And profits from the business came in hard
Harry Hunter gave it in to be an alcaholic king
Among the coastal tribe they call the bard

The woman were his lovers and they never seemed to judge
For all the evil Harry had achieved
For all their tribal brothers in the deserts to the east
He was white and civilised and they believed

The years ran through Hunters Creek and Harry ruled alone
His drinking and his fear intensified
Sid Hadley preached the bible to the people of the isles
And Frenchy spent them out beyond the tide

Now the cyclones are the killers in the monsoon months at sea
They hit a schooner hard and sink her cold
And many were the sailors bodies smashed against the beach
And Frenchy D'Antoine was getting old

He'd sailed beyond his luck and cheated storms beyond his years
But could not face a future on the shore
So he found a sheltered anchorage and stayed in Roebuck Bay
And went bluewater sailing no more

And this is where his two domestic girls on one summer morn
Slipped across the rail and swam away
Leaving Frenchy's gypsey body in its bed before the dawn
Rocking to the rythms of the sea

Now Harry Hunter had a dream that feasted on his sleep
To see the green of England once again
So his sons took his dilerium and laid him on a deck
And set a sail for London on the Thames

And three days out of Cape Leveque and raving on his rum
Of how Sid Hadley cursed him and his bones
He died beneath the fires of an Indian Ocean sun
Fourteen thousand miles away from home

His women left the campsite and lined along the shore
To watch his tiny ship return to view
There was silence as his body sailed back up Hunters Creek
Then they melted off into the land they knew

Three Blackbirds flew together on the gather of a storm
A cyclone wind that blew in bitterly
And one sang for the ocean and another for the Lord
And one flew from an arm he could not see

The Devil lies exile bound for all eternity
For every human soul that he's enslaved
Harry Hunter's bones are buried in the sand of Cape Leveque
No headstone stands to mark his lonely grave
